I noticed lots of sites higher up in Google have started doing this. Any advice on improving my site is greatly appreciated.

Great question! So it won’t necessarily hurt but it should come off as organic, meaning that it’s not just the keyword alone. I typically add in other words or spintax the spelling of a key phrase. Your root directory should absolutely have some of the core words contained and relate closely with the actual page’s category and content. Best of luck!
