shopify and duplicate content – is the august spam update the problem?
I am a small business owner and have been teaching myself SEO for the last few years. I understand how most of the on-page stuff works but the technical side is an ongoing challenge. We've had a fairly significant drop over the past few weeks, with keywords I had built pages for quite successfully. (ecommerce niche business, made to order clothing items)
I have been using chatgpt to help troubleshoot what I dont understand – and it seems to pinpoint our not-indexed pages as the problem with this specific core update. to be clear – we have 11.5k not indexed, and 927 indexed. more than half of the not indexed are Alternate page with proper canonical tag, a lot are 404s from old products we no longer sell.
The rest all seem to be location based variants – that shopify just does – eg nz, or us in the url. does google really penalize for this? do i need to do something in the coding? do i need to manually do something to each url?
I would be so incredibly grateful to anyone that could possibly help me troubleshoot what is going on, if it needs to be fixed, and how to fix it.
