  • SEO Agency Refusing to Use Google Search Console, Says Manual Searches Are More Accurate

Posted by keep-the-momentum on February 9, 2026 at 2:20 pm

We’ve been with our SEO agency for 6 months. From the start, we agreed that Google Search Console would be the single source of truth for keyword rankings and performance.

Now they’re refusing to use it. They claim Search Console is inaccurate and that manually searching keywords is more reliable.

We’re seeing completely different data. Search Console shows our hero KW rankings declining for 3 straight months, along with drops in traffic and visibility.

But when they search the same keywords on their local devices, they say we rank in top positions.

When we question this, they tell us to check rankings in incognito mode and say that reflects the “real” results.

This shift in reporting mid campaign is frustrating, especially since it contradicts the data trend we’re seeing.

Is there any validity to their claim that Search Console is inaccurate for rankings?

And how would you handle this situation with the SEO agency?

Red Flag. I mean – using a 3rd party SERP report is good for “over-time” analysis, scoring, reporting

    >When we question this, they tell us to check rankings in incognito mode and say that reflects the “real” results.

SERPs results change by browser, user, location and during the day.

These are kind of all odd statements from them

    >And how would you handle this situation with the SEO agency?

100% – tbh – it sounds like something else is the problem.

    What is your SEO strategy?

What I mean is: 6 months ago, where did you want to be? How many keywords, Where are you now?

    What are leads/sales like?

What have you done? Did that help achieve your goal? did you pivot? why?

    >This shift in reporting mid campaign is frustrating, especially since it contradicts the data trend we’re seeing.

Is your SEO strategy stringently linked to keyword positions and GSC is giving different data and the whole think is just about one or a handful of keywords?

In GSC – are you restrcting the country/device to the same as your SERP report?

Why isn’t eh conversation centered around building topical authority?

Terrible take on the part of the SEO company.

Results ARE highly localized and highly personalized but a simple ‘incognito’ check isn’t a meaningful evaluation of ranking except as a spot check for specific users.

Search Console has limitations on its ranking reporting especially as you try and get more granular and filter data more, but it is hard to deny that it is one of the best SEO tools (period) for keyword ranking and ranking insights.

    You’re both wrong.

They are wrong because GSC is useful for informing trends and issues with your site.

You are wrong because GSC is a poor measure of actual traffic and site analytics. You should use GA for that.

You also have to realize that GSC is not real data, it’s sampled. Rankings are average rankings and not localized. Keyword data is also based on every keyword a site ranks for, even the ones that don’t matter. You should be using Semrush or Ahref, or whatever service you prefer to track important keywords by location.

Fire these guys and hire a reputable company, then listen to them.

In their defence KW ranking in GSC counts all the features in the SERP. So Ads count, map pack counts, carousels count, AI overview counts. you can be the number 1 organic link but the 7th-8th listed feature. Google is cramming more and more shite at the top of the page so potentially your organic ranking has remained the same but GSC reports it as falling. Not saying this is the case but food for thought

you should immediately fire any SEO that would refuse to use GSC. they can provide additional data if they like, but they should know every single thing that is going on in GSC and be able to speak to it whenever you ask.

It’s not that GSC is inaccurate it’s that its data is a fraction of all searches and all metrics are an average of that sample.

Many searches are excluded by GSC for privacy reasons, leaving only searches that pass privacy filters in GSC.

There is not accurate data sources in SEO unfortunately.

I mean if you were using SEMrush or Ahrefs as the single source of truth and they said use manual, okay but GSC and Google Analytis are pretty much THE definitive measurement of rankings. It shows clicks, impressions, rankings and the data is directly from Google. So uhh, that’s confusing.

Did they say why the shift? That seems the odd thing.

I’d fire them, there are some exploits they could be using to show your results at top of screen locally that aren’t ranking you at all beyond your immediate area. The refusal to use gsc data is fishy the refusal to use other data sets like ahrefs semrush etc. is bad.

Sounds a lot like a client of mine and their former cowboy seo agency.

“GSC data is inaccurate. Let me show you your real rankings on Google. Look. Number one. Look, number one again…. This shows you that something is wrong with your website when you are not getting sales”…
