Selling an Instagram handle to a big company.
Posted by on May 2, 2021 at 10:14 pmI won’t disclose any info. But I have an Instagram handle that a big movie studio may want in the future. (I don’t have many followers but the studio will want to own the handle for advertising purposes).
Other handles from this company have millions of followers. Do you think the company will approach me to buy eventually?

Unless it is the direct business name or they are very particular about licensing and covering their bases, probably not. Plus, if you’re posting anything that could be construed as impersonation, I wouldn’t doubt that there would be a lawsuit.

Instagram’s terms of service prohibit the sale of usernames (I can’t link to these because this subreddit has an awful filter in place, but **you should read them**).
There have been other threads on this in the past here and there have been both good and bad advice dispensed. You should definitely make sure you follow the terms of service or you will no longer have a username you consider to have value.
You should also know that the company could just file a trademark complaint and snatch the name up anyway, if it is a name they have registered as a trademark.

If it’s at all related to them in a notable way, they probably own that trademark and will have it for free in 1 email. So no, they won’t buy it. Pretty sure selling handles is against the terms anyways

I have experienced the other way around. A person had a handled with our company’s brand/name. We called IG and send a copy of a business card with other legal business doc and got the handle assigned to us in a day. True story.
