Around six years ago, the client owned a very local and niche small business. He had a very active account with around 5k followers, and around 200 likes on each post.

He took a few years off, and continued to post, but not necessarily about the business.

Now, he’s opening the business again. He still has the same number of followers (even more), but his engagement has plummeted. Only 2 or 3 likes on each post. I truly think a lot of his followers aren’t even on IG anymore.

I’ve tried the traditional way of growing an account, but not much seems to be working. Any tips on reviving an old account?

If it’s meant to just be business, I would archive the posts that are not business related since those are the most recent posts that might make people unwilling to engage. Do an audit of the account and what worked previously and try to get some of that magic back. Utilize stories since so many people just look at those these days. You can just share the post from the grid at first if you don’t want to worry about creating new content for stories too, but Instagram has changed a lot these last few years and is favoring stories over grid posts. Also, do some competitive research. What are the (realistic) competitors that are doing better on the IG game than you right now: what are they doing? How can you replicate it? Are the hashtags that you’re using niche enough to not get buried but still relevant (for example: when you look at hashtags, don’t just use the biggest ones that have millions of posts, you’ll never be seen that way but you don’t want to use the hashtags that only have 100 posts to them)?

How willing is your client to produce video content? Instagram has gone heavy with that. So much has changed.
