Remember Orkut? A Look at How Social Media Evolved Till 2025
I’ve been thinking about how wild this internet journey was, especially for those of us who started on Orkut.
I remember Scraps, Testimonials… The Cool / Sexy / Trustworthy badges.
Your crush is viewing your profile. Those glittery GIF communities…. ah… those days!!
It was chaotic, slow, and honestly……. I think it was perfect.Launched in 2004, Orkut became the first real social home for millions, especially in India and Brazil. It wasn’t about aesthetics or algorithms, but I feel it was about showing who your “Best Friends” were and hoping someone wrote you a testimonial that wasn’t embarrassing.
And then by 2014, it just faded away quietly. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, they changed everything. But Orkut was where many of us learned what being online felt like.
Fast-forward to December 2025:
- Platforms run on AI-integrated algorithms now.
- Short-form video dominates everything. Look at TikTok and Instagram Reels
- Communities moved from scraps to Discord servers and private groups.
- Social media became a career path that a lot like me wouldn't even have thought about…… influencers, creators, UGC, the whole ecosystem.
- Brands compete for attention in milliseconds, not minutes.
But one thing hasn’t changed:
We still come online to connect, to express, and to belong. The tools evolved but the instinct stayed the same.Honestly, Orkut wasn’t just a platform. It was the first time many of us experienced a digital identity. And that little nostalgia hit? Still undefeated.
What’s your strongest Orkut memory? Did you flex the badges? Hunt for testimonials? Join weird communities?
