  • Relevancy – SEO’s Killer Factor

I know there are tons of things that go into ranking with SEO, but I’ve been focusing a lot on relevancy recently and have had some incredible results.

My thinking is this. What does Google want?
They want to serve up their users relevant content.

If a user searches for “plumber in LA”, then they want to make sure they are returning websites that are about LA plumbers right?

Not just websites about plumbers, or websites about how to be a plumber.

If they didn’t nail this, then people would eventually stop using Google, and would use another search engine which would mean loss of revenue etc.

So for me, when I build a site in my lead gen business that I want to get to #1, I go out of my way to tell Google that my site is 100% about “plumbers in LA” or whatever leads I’m trying to generate.

Apart from obvious factors like titles, keywords, etc. I’ll also link out to Wiki or another authority site to their “plumber” page, and then another link out to their “LA” page.

This is telling Google – “Hey, this website is linking out to another website about plumbing…it must therefore be about plumbing”.

Combined with all the other factors like titles, keywords, this sends a really strong relativity message to Google.

With backlinks, I’ll also try hard to get backlinks from other plumbing sites, or other sites about LA. Again, this tells Google that if these other plumbing sites or LA sites are linking to this website, then it must be related to the same content.

Anyway, just wanted to share something that’s been working great guns for me lately.

    Hope it helps.

Can you share a graph about your change in ranking and how it effects your serp?
    Are you using rich data?

Yep. Agreed. That’s why all the AI tools like Clearscope, Wordmetrics, etc. work so well. It’s all about relevancy now and not about direct-match keywords anymore.

You still need to do keyword research, but using your main keyword in your post X times, and in your headers is over.

Man.. i wanted to write about this today in r/seo.

You are spot on. How many times we have seen sites with DA 15 or 17 in the first position and sites with DA 95 in the second page for a keyword. It is all about relevancy.

I’m an amateur at this but you’re hitting on exactly what I need. So, if I had a video production company in an area, say Detroit, would I link to the detroit.gov website or a wikipedia page about Detroit to send Google that signal? Also, would it help me to link to Wikipedia articles about the different services I provide, like 4k videography, and drones?

Disagree, and am also good at SEO. My first principle is always what the reader wants. I then focus on context, clarity, and organization. After that I break it up into sections with headers and text following solid, boring SEO principles.

The word that’s usually used for this type of thinking in SEO is search intent.

You want to nail the search intent of the user with your page, if you do that, you’re on the right track!

I’ve only been learning SEO for a short while, but I don’t see anything in here that’s not been recommended for years?

It’s *always* been about relevancy ?‍♀️
