Reddit ads… worth it? Seems different than say google ads.

Hell, I kind of miss stumbleupon… that was a fun place when it was working. But curious what the best type of reddit ads are composed of. Frankly I know that reddit is an honest community – if I can call it that – and people will flat out ignore you if you're trying to redirect them outside of the community to sell some odd thing in an isolated environment. So I imagine an ad to join a community would be the best use case for bringing folks in to retain them into a cycle… but wondering if you all have a usecase for reddit ads that people should try and explore.

In my anecdotal experience, Reddit ads are complete dogshit.

The one time I tried Reddit ads, my first $500 of spend got 0 conversions. My first $500 of ads for the same service on Meta, Google, and Bing all got dozens of conversions. (And it wasn’t just a conversion tracking issue; I checked.)

Reddit ads earn a high engagement, impressions, views with no conversions. Similar to Tik Tok and Pinterest. Find a subreddit and work with the mod to seed your content or run an organic promotion. Same with Tik Tok—you need to partner with a creator.

Reddit users smell marketing from a mile away so direct response ads get destroyed unless you’re offering something the community already wants… some accounts I’ve tested spending saw 3-5x higher CPAs than Meta/Google because Reddit traffic doesn’t convert well on standard funnels, they need community-first content not landing pages.

The only success I’ve seen is brands using Reddit ads to drive to subreddits or AMAs where they can build trust before selling… but honestly for most businesses Google and Meta deliver way better ROI because their targeting actually works and users are in buying mode not browsing mode.

Reddit Ads work best when they’re paired with organic engagement, especially in places where you’re already a known quantity! That being said, taking the time to do campaign testing ahead of running your full spend will yield the best results, as well as getting the Reddit Pixel and Conversions API set up.

As for the organic side of things, we’re building tools with Reddit Pro to make it easier to find where conversations around your specific vertical are already happening. You may already know some subreddits, but there may be others you’re not aware of, and being able to search through the keywords to know where they might be can be a great starting point to being authentically engaged!

Same lots of clicks and form fill, and this was an industry with 10% form fill. So the fact i got 1000 clicks and no form fill was odd.

Regardless , you should still test it out yourself.

I get a goodly proportion of my income from google search ads which I self manage. I know my market and thought that maybe on Reddit I could find similar people and gain more revenue by being present there too. I started a campaign (with lots of help from Reddit) and blew $3000 which resulted in many many more site visits (yay) and zero conversions, none (booo).

I expect it will depend a great deal on what you’re selling but my market simply are not on this platform. And people on this platform are mostly in “browsing / “distract me” mode, not shopping mode.

Worth it only for awareness, I wouldn’t treat it like Google Search. Lots of clicks, weak intent.
