  • Quotes on instagram post images – copyright issues?

Posted by seohelper on May 8, 2021 at 9:27 pm

Hey folks, maybe you can help me with my question: To make my Instagram feed (I’m a writer) a bit more diverse, I’d like to create images (no pictures, just some Canva template in my feed colours) with famous quotes + author / person who said it. In the posting text, I’d write about why this quote inspires me, etc., how I see it from my perspective,… Is this legally okay? Could there be any trouble for me? I’m living in Europe.

Thanks a lot! Feedback very appreciated 🙂

Technically, the person who said the quote holds the copyright. They can take legal action on you if you use it.

That said, it would be foolish for anyone to come after you for using their quote as long as you attribute them. You have just provided them with a bit of free advertising and going after you would make them look like a jerk.

If you are worried about it, there are plenty of great copyright free quotes. Just look for ones in the public domain.

look up what “Fair use” is – you would arguably have the right to do this as long as you aren’t trying to pass the quote off as your own.
