    Questions from a beginner

Posted by seohelper on August 24, 2021 at 2:56 am

I am currently learning about Google Ads and volunteering to run a campaign for a charity (using the Google Grants program).

The campaign has recently gone live and I have a few questions:

    1. When I turn off my ad blocker and search for certain terms no ads show up at all.. is this because of the ad blocker? I reckon in PPC I shouldn’t use ad blockers
    2. My client would like to know why ads aren’t showing up for certain keywords… There are some keywords which do not get any impressions (so I assume they’re low competition) and yet ads do no show up for them? What may cause this? What could I tell my client?
    3. Do all keywords present ads? Or would something informational such as “dog” not appear (I don’t see any ads when I search that)?

    1. Some ad blockers do block Google Ads
    2. If your keyword has 0 impressions, that may mean no one is searching for it. Do you mean nothing comes up when you search it as well? There could be a bunch of reasons for this.
    3. I know there are some search queries that Google doesn’t serve ads for anymore, as they’re “sensetive”. I can’t really see anyone anywhere getting any value from bidding on “dog” so that may be one reason. Another may be that ya, it’s a query where a knowledge panel is enough to answer a users question. Something like “the date today”

2+3 : It depends on your bidding. If it is maximize clicks or conversions it will show the ad to people who are the most likely to click(or convert).

Use target impression share to show the ad to everyone

Your ads aren’t/shouldn’t show up for every search. They should only show up if your actually being targeted and googles AI thinks you’re worth bidding high enough for.
If you are going to search for your own ads, use the Ads preview and diagnostics tool within Google Ads. It’ll tell you if your ad is showing up and why/why not and perhaps more importantly, won’t hurt your CTR. If you keep searching for your ads and don’t click on them, you’ll increase your impressions without increasing your clicks (cuz you don’t want to pay for your own clicks) and this will lower your CTR, which is one of the requirements of keeping your grant. Same goes for your client. Tell them NOT to search for their own ads as that is hurting them and the more they search, the more likely google will learn that they aren’t actually going to click on them and therefore start to bid down when they are searching.
TLDR; Don’t search for your ads. Use the Ads Preview & Diagnostics tool instead.

Dog would be a terrible keyword choice. There is a good reason why Ad Grants don’t allow single word keywords.

Dog… what? What is the person looking for that you offer? Fostering, adoption, training, food, first aid, shelter etc. Focus on the specific need and the intention of the searcher.

1.Google Ads are blocked by several ad blockers.
2.If your keyword has received no impressions, it’s possible that no one is looking for it. Do you mean that when you search for it, nothing comes up? This could be due to a variety of factors.
3.I’m aware that Google no longer serves advertising for certain search queries because they’re “sensetive.” I can’t imagine anyone getting anything out of bidding on “dog,” so that could be one reason. Another possibility is that, yes, it’s a query in which a knowledge panel is sufficient to answer a user’s query. “Today’s date,” for example.

1- Ad blockers will prevent your ads from showing
2-Everything @hawkeyman said is true, follow those steps. Also charities have a 2 dollar bid in charity accounts, so you’re not going to rank for those high search volume& costly terms. You can win better auctions if you import conversion tracking and use a smart bidding strategy. This will allow to compete for things you actually want to and serve people well
3- Google is removing more and more keywords from the keyword planner. Some dangerous terms like drugs and alcohol make sense, but I’ve seen really normal keyword being removed, it’s at their discretion.
    3-

1 – use ad preview and diagnosis tool in Google ads to see what your ads look like
