  • Primary Keyword for E-Comm Stores

    So I am working with a company who sells breast pumps and certain parts for it. I am working on their product pages and I was choosing the focus keyword for each product page. Where I get a little confused on how to proceed is if there's multiple products that can utilize the same primary keyword.

    For example: M1 Portable Breast Pump vs. M2 Portable Breast Pump. They both can focus on "portable breast pump" but I've heard to choose one primary keyword for each page so they dont compete against each other. I was thinking, well they are electric what if I update one product to say, "M2 Portable Electric Breast Pump" and now the primary keyword I would focus on is portable electric breast pump. And now both products have different focus keywords.

    Side Notes & Questions:

    Is this even the correct way of looking at it? In a sense of choosing a primary keyword or should I just optimize the product pages for the same keywords and make sure the information for a product like this is relevant and quality for the user? Also, would it be smart to show a comparison on both products being very similar but different specs and features?

    I’d say showcase the main difference between the two products and include it in the keywords is fine. And the primary keywords are still the same but with a little variation. So that you can not only target the primary keywords but also target more specific keywords that cover the primary ones. Hope this makes sense.

    Treat “portable breast pump” as a category/collection keyword. That page can rank for the broad term and electric variations. That page can do the heavy SEO lifting. Double check what pages come up in SERPs – category pages or product pages?

    Don’t overthink unique primary keywords for very similar products. Some products don’t need their own keyword target, If there’s no real search demand. In those cases, optimize for brand/model accuracy and user experience.

    Don’t overthink “primary keyword cannibalization” on product pages. If you sell two very similar items (like M1 vs M2 breast pumps), it’s fine if they both target “portable breast pump.” Google understands these are unique products, and people search by model names too.

    If one is electric and another is manual, then sure “portable electric breast pump” vs. “portable manual breast pump” works. But don’t force a variation if it doesn’t feel natural.

    There are no hard and fast rules. People need to stop assuming universal points of observation in SEO.

    Sorry for being direct, but I think this at the root of the question. I assume you dont want to break things.

    Firstly, google is a page-level system that does not “understand” your site. It doesnt assess it, it doesnt seek to do so.

    Google is a sophisticated keyword database replacement for SQL-style databases that use string matching. It will never be replaced (imho) because PageRank is so efficient (for all its flaws). Thats why LLM tools will just build on it.

    But you can break things and roll back – its not judging you – its not going to punish you. We need to stop being afraid of it and treat its as a database retrieval system with a basic pre-LLM prompt.

    Secondly, and this differs from site to site, keyword to keyword – you need to learn if the keyword in the URL or in the title or both – is the decider between corralling traffic from one page to another.

    An easy way to hack this – if both are coming to the same page – then you may have no choice.

    Nobody but your users can answer this – put Microsoft Clarity on it – its free, fast, professional – watch what people do on your page and decide for yourself.
