Hey everyone, on top of my design business, I started to freelance SEO work on the side. I’ve been in the SEO space for over 8 years and pretty much have touched different areas from technical, content strategy and production, UX design, product management but always been in the SEO side of the team (worked in tech, e-commerce, publishing)

For the freelancers out there, how are yall pricing your value? Hourly? Retainer? And what’s a good baseline for someone with my experience?

I’ve worked in SEO since 2007. For me, it all depends on how many clients you want/have and how deep you want to go with a company. When I first started freelancing, I kept it to hourly, and that hourly depended on the depth and difficulty of the work (basic audits vs full-fledged strategies and execution plans with budgets). I charged between $100-$225/hr.

After a while, when I found a couple solid companies who were pleased with my services, I negotiated a retainer and/or a percentage of the revenue I generated. The latter can be tricky to track in some cases, but that’s been a solid income stream.

We have packages based on the client needs and size of company, varying from $250-750/mo. We bill month-to-month, leaving the client with the option to continue with no strings attached.

Regardless of the package they go for (which is more-so based on how many keywords we’re tracking, how much research work is involved, and link building budget), we always communicate what the deliverables are for the upcoming service month.
