  • Pages are canonicalized, but default M2 forces uses of meta robots (index, follow)

The sites im working on use magento2. each page has a duplicate – trailing slash & non trailing slash. I am canonicalizing the no-trailing-slash to the trailing-slash version. But my M2 does not allow for different meta robots on these types of pages. I am forced to use index, follow on both versions.

so basically half the site has a canonical + index, follow.

I need to know if this conflict is detrimental or a non-issue.

Should I bother with having the dev team spend time on creating a way for me to leave robots empty on the canonicalized page (or have them do a noindex, follow on the canonicalized pages)

    ?

This isn’t an issue. As long as all the URLs that refer to same page have the proper canonical tag, that’s what matters. Index, follow is the default if you left out the meta robots tag.

You should redirect all variants of the URL to canonical though.
