What is the real deal with page speed? My sites are ultra lean and load very fast when testing in person (on cacheless browsers), but Google Page Speed insights always gives me a trash speed rating. I have also noticed other tools (such as tools dot pingdom dot com) give way different stats.

    1. how important/accurate are these metrics really for SEO?
    2. What tool do you use? Is Google Page Speed Insights the best one?

    Thanks!

PSI uses metrics penalise sites if the DOM is large, even if they appear to load fast. To score really well you need good hosting AND a very lean and efficient theme, or better still no theme at all.

PM your website, I could check.

You have to trust on Third Party Speed Measure tools as well as the Google’s tools. Because Google relies on their tools to an extent.

**Page Load Issues:** If you are using WordPress mostly site builder themes cause dropdown in load speed and the Speed index.

Heavy themes will anyway cause speed and page loading problems anyway, whatever tools, plugins, cdns you try.

The reason being that, they have site builder with unnecessary PHP functions, Javascripts loads one after another(they do not take hours, but they take time). Because the big themes have lot more things to calculate before load.

Although the heavy themes have no meaning, but they comes cheaper(the most popular Avada theme). One needs to show the website components, and if there’s some custom button, control or App it needs to be created individually, but Heavy(Site Builder) themes are build for all, they try to solve everything and becomes slow, and really slow.

But custom WordPress theme, or lite theme with custom Application part integrated comes with some minimum developer cost.

**How to make my website faster:** A developer and programmer myself, I know – you could make website faster if you have lite theme.Although lite themes has no comfort of page building or the Custom design. This is another downside. To use lite theme, if you have no SaaS implemented, you could change some parts of the theme – maybe adding another button, changing header style etc , and these changes would not cost in page load speed.

There are CDN(cloudflare)s you could try, heavy themes will take time, how much optimization you do.

Open a big page builder theme like Avada, inside there are hundreds of interconnected functions, they require time to calculate. They does not take hours, but still they take time.
