Is there an open social media platform? The one where unlike say facebook, a company doesn’t have to monetize it with ads. I was thinking like a wikipedia of social media.

It is likely that there is some such platform but it is not popular or successful. Why not? Again I am thinking that if wikipedia can be hugely successful, why not a social media with a similar philosophy.

Because it costs money to develop and maintain. Wikipedia gets donations. Do you think a group of people want to volunteer their precious time and personal money to make something like this happen?

Also, greed is a thing. Social media platforms are nothing but data mines. Who in the world would be so altruistic that they’ll turn down 100s of millions of dollars for something like this?

Yes, it would be nice but so highly unlikely.

    Edit: spelling mistake

There’s a few decentralized social apps – the one getting the most press lately (for better or worse) is bitclout. It’s got it’s problems but also ticks off a lot of the boxes you claim to be looking for.
