Having to log in may dissuade from visiting the site. This is actually negative for the platform.

While I am against denying to view content without login, it has this one benefit described in the title.

I got this thought when noticing that Instagram now completely denies access to public profiles without login. A few days ago, it was just a pop-up that could be bypassed with a browser extension or developer tools. But now, the site redirects to the login form.

Doesn’t Instagram realize that they reduce the outreach of their platform?! ???

Nevertheless, I just wanted to share this thought.

I think that many platforms do that because, once you log-in, you’re more likely to spend more time on the platform.

Maybe you click on a random link, watch whatever it is and then stay longer to check notifications, texts and end up browsing more content. Also if you happen not to have an account you’re more incentivied to create one.

That being said, I feel you! Whenever this happens to me I usually just leave the page unless I’m *really* interested in that post…

I think it’s lame some websites and blogs make you log in but for a platform I think that’s pretty reasonable.

It doesn’t really extend the reach of their platform nor benefit then in anyway to have you on there without being logged in because they can’t send you targeted ads or scrape your data.
