  • Old and not valuable content – noindex or unpublish?

Posted by seohelper on May 11, 2021 at 4:33 pm

I have over 100+ blog pages on my site that are old and provide no value – low impr/clicks, no SERP. None of them is cannibalising keywords but they might have content that could be wrong or misleading because it’s old. I wouldn’t be able to optimise them all so I wonder which of the following options is recommended:

    – tag the blog pages as no-index

    – unpublish and redirect to pages

    – unpublish with a 404 error

    – unpublish with a 410 error

    Thanks for your help!

My suggestion :if there is no cannibalization issue,
Let it be there, Make use of it for internal linking.
Link it to your money pages.

I’d say that because you’re still getting some clicks, you’re best bet is to redirect them to a new page with new information. If you don’t have a new page with updated info create it, then add a blurb on the top of the old pages saying “hey this is old, go here for new” –> I’d say this is the best SEO play so you can maximize what you have. After a few months/weeks you can just to a straight redirect as your new page ranks

Do these pages provide value for users? If not, delete them.

    Use 301 redirects where appropriate.

Yes! My site saw HUGE improvements after site pruning. Remove these pages from your sitemap and redirect them to your homepage or a similar, updated article. Google looks at your site quality overall and too many irrelevant pages can drag you down!
