This is why SEO is a broken business model. You are all but guaranteed to get fired once you reach the 1st page, because that’s when your usefulness is complete. You didn’t do anything wrong, you did everything right. They just don’t need you anymore now that their traffic is up.
I like rank & rent and ranking my own website, that way your clients have no choice but to get customers from you so long as they keep paying.

135% traffic increase is pretty impressive but was traffic increase the key performance indicator (KPI)? Or did the site have a proper conversion to business, such as a “request a quote” form?
Increased traffic can be a KPI if the client wants an awareness increase but a small business owner is usually looking for an increase in prospects to drive paying customers. At least, mine did when I was involved in SEO services.
I will also say SEO expectations can be different from what they tell you or they don’t really listen to the discussion of how to measure success. I had one client that tried to claim ‘success’ was a step inside his business rather than increasing prospect contacts for his internal team to complete the sale.

Traffic is meaningless unless it also brings more sales. It needs to be the right traffic.
I’d rather have 1 visitor and 1 sale, than 10 billion visitors and no sales.

Did you use Yoast on this site at all??
I’m not sure if you knew where duplicates came from or not?
I know with Yoast there’s a button that can create duplicate content, had it happen with one of my sites
Just had to click the button to make it disappear.
Obviously you turned off crawling to these dups??
