    Negative Keyword Confusion

Posted by Dale_E_Lehman_Author on July 26, 2024 at 7:46 pm

I'm new to PPC advertising so probably I'm misunderstanding things. I'm an author testing some ads for my books on Amazon. Using the reports, I see I'm getting a lot of impressions on a few searches that I want to exclude, so I'm looking at negative keywords to help refine my campaign.

If, for example, I have as a keyword "mystery book" (which by default is in 3 times as exact, phrase, and broad), I see I'm getting a lot of impressions on "free mystery books" and "cozy mystery books." These categories don't fit my books, so I tried putting in negative keywords "free" and "cozy" as exact. I was under the impression that any searches containing those words would be eliminated, and it does seem to have reduced the problem, but some are still getting through.

So far, what I've found on the web explaining negative keywords is lacking sufficiently close examples to tell me if I'm doing it wrong and, if so, how. I assume I am, though. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Add free and cozy as phrase or broad.

Just change from exact to phrase match. Negative exact matchs are if someone goes to google and searches close to exactly those terms. Like 1 word “exact” or “cozy”. Most not likely a problem.

I made a list of some example negative keywords and how to implement them. You can search on Google for “buyergain universal negative keyword list” and get a free example list.

By adding them as exact, you’re only excluding *free* and *cozy*. Change them from exact to phrase and you should be good.

Always use broad and single words when possible.

    i.e. negative keywords:
    cozy
    cozys
    cosys

^ You’ll have to do shit like this. Because even with the above 3 negative keywords, your ad will still show if someone types in:

    “cozzy mystery books”

Negative keywords do NOT match close variants.

also check the age and targeted countries to filter out and also add broad match also.
