Moving all pages to .php

So recently I had to move all of my webpages from .html to .php. Since then my traffic went down by 50% and one month later Google still show results and bring visitors to my .html webpages even though they are no longer exist.
I tried resubmitting my Sitemap xml file to Google but still no change.Any recommendations how to make this smoother? Am I missing something?

I assume all pages stayed the same? Just redirect the .html urls to the corresponding .php url
