Hey all, my company has been doing more and more migrations. As much as I want to pull my hair out I feel like they are a worth while product and bring high value, I just think my supervisor doesn’t understand what a good one is. I did a redirect sheet and he scolded me for having 404s in there saying they’re not valuable. (Ironically when he did it there were 404s in his as well). I agree they have no current traffic but to say they aren’t valuable just sounds wrong. Plus I’ve seen some material saying that everything needs to be redirected over, excluding search queries obviously, but including 404s. How do you build a good redirect sheet and what are some other ways you make a migration valuable to the clients? Trying to make a worthwhile product over here but it feels like everyone calling the shots have their heads too far up their own asses to actually know what they’re talking about.

Every time I migrated a site, I made sure there were no 404 errors. If a page was not being moved across I would find a relevant page to redirect too.

Why would you allow a 404 to exists if it has the potential to affect how the search engines crawl your site? Even lower value pages may have some traffic coming through. If people see a 404, then it just looks bad and that could have been a lead. You never know.

    Few questions:

    1. Why have you not redirected 404 pages yet?

    2. Are these 404 were actual pages or they are just misspelled URLs?

    3. If they were actual pages before did they received any traffic?

    4. Does these 404 pages have any backlinks?
