You’ll get a coinflip of answers when asking SEOs if it’s worth trying to rank organically for your own website but to me, not putting any effort into doing so doesn’t make sense.
If you are only invested in providing SEO, then part of your lead generation strategy should come from SEO.
I’m not sure what city you’re in, but people in my area DO actively look for SEO experts and agencies, and the competition is only going to increase over time, so you might as well put your foot down and get a foundation set before you’re swallowed up by 100000 agencies trying to do the same thing.
No matter where you live, there are going to be keywords you can take and with a focus on CRO, you should be able to translate some of those leads to clients.
How much effort you want to put into ranking organically should be done by evaluating much ROI you’re going to get out of your time and effort.
If you need to spend a considerable amount of time and money to rank for low volume keywords, then put your eggs in different baskets (which is what you should always do regardless).
I’ve had agencies cold-email to my clients at the start of their campaigns and say “bUt lOoK u HaVe nO orGaniC trAffIc!” and then I look deeper into their website and the irony sets in.
Things like this always come down to workload, effort and if you can make a genuine decision and say “I can probably rank for this keyword quite easily”.
