  • Lower CTR: Low Site Relevance or Just Ranking For More Keywords?

Posted by seohelper on January 4, 2021 at 11:29 pm

    Hey SEO pros,

Looking at search console, I noticed that my CTR has significantly decreased. Conversely, impressions is significantly higher. I’m assuming that this is likely because the site is ranking for more keywords – BUT is it possible to get a surefire answer to this?

    Thank you in advance!

You’re likely ranking for more keywords after the recent December update. Look at GSC, filter date to only December and view the queries tab. There’s likely a lot that have fourth or fifth page positions with very few clicks and a handful of impressions. If they are all site-relevant then congrats, your site is doing well! Bonus- if there’s a few keywords with an outlier CTR that’s higher than the rest, that’s a quick win to focus on. Work on your basic on-site optimization on the pages that target those new keywords, title tags aren’t a direct ranking factor but they sure can entice someone to click.
