  • Lost positions over night for top keywords

Last week my website traffic suddenly dropped 20% from google. When I looked at why it appears that many of the top keywords lost rank all at once. On Monday they were fine on Tuesday they fell. They fell somewhere between 1-3 spots.

A few of my newer and lower ranking posts slightly grew. And most of my middle preforming posts stayed the same.

Yesterday it appeared it appeared to rebound a little, but still about 12% down.

I cannot figure out what caused this. This happened a week or so after Google said their update was finished. I didn’t change anything on my site. I checked for errors and found now. My CWV is passing except LCP on mobile is yellow (2.8 seconds).

Any idea what would cause a site to suddenly drop rankings on many keywords overnight? Or how I can diagnose this? I’ve read all the articles I can find, but none so far has helped.

Hey there, you don’t have to worry about it. The thing is that Google itself is testing things, so one day you might be at the top, another day you might have declined for 80 positions. For the last 10 days or so, one of my landing pages is having that issue as well. It is going to top 10, then declining to 50 overnight, then come back to top 10. That is going over and over. I decided not to change anything. If this is the case for another 5 days, I am going to just try to change the content a bit, and see if there is difference.

You can check what are the search queries that went down. Maybe you can find something from there. If they fell from the same theme, then maybe it’s because you have keyword cannibalization issues.

1-3 spots is not a really a drop.

TOP 10 for most keywords gets swapped around multiple times a day and there is nothing much to it. If close pages are in the TOP 10 they will be switched around constantly.
