LLMs are changing SEO fast are we supposed to optimize for Google or AI now?
Posted by govindkashyap01 on January 16, 2026 at 7:53 amSeeing more talk about LLM SEO / GEO / LLMO lately.
Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT answers, Perplexity — all pulling content without traditional clicks.
Feels like classic SEO (rank → click → traffic) is slowly breaking.
Questions for people actually testing this:
Are you changing how you write content for LLMs?
Do mentions/brand visibility matter more than rankings now?
Is schema + clear answers helping AI pick your content?
Anyone tracking traffic or leads from AI tools yet?
Not looking for guru takes only real experiments and results.

GuestJanuary 16, 2026 at 8:05 amStart testing. There is no one definitief strategy that always works. Brand mentions (with the right context) can really help. They can even be a pain if a brand has shifted focus after ten years because based on the training data LLMs still associate the brand with different services or products.
Try out different content types and structures. But do keep monitoring with a broader perspective. I had 3 clients where we saw more LLM based referral traffic but normal SEO results dropped considerably. And for most websites that is still the biggest chunk (no pun intended) of traffic.

GuestJanuary 16, 2026 at 8:17 amWe have set up LLM tracking and audits. The 2 key metrics we’re looking at is brand mentions and website citations (also kinda looking at referral traffic but not hugely), so its more a visibility thing.
Our websites are flying with citations for authoritative content – we havent done anything special in how we’ve created the content, just focused on what has always worked for SEO – good content that adds value
Brand mentions we’re seeing lag a bit and that’s mostly cause they originate from 3rd party sites more and we haven’t been doing digital PR for our clients (they have separate agencies for that).
Would definitely say the currency is shifting to visibility in results, as opposed to traffic. Where we are measuring traffic it is about engaged’ high quality traffic, rather than pure numbers

GuestJanuary 16, 2026 at 11:14 amRankings still matter for Google traffic, but now AI visibility counts too, so having clear, structured content, good schema, and mentions across the web helps AI pick your stuff. Traffic from AI is harder to track since a lot of answers don’t even send users to your site, but optimizing for both Google and AI at the same time seems like the smart move.

Let’s understand in this way:
The role of Google is search was to provide the best solutions to users using thier algorithms.
With time, people find out some loopholes (kw stuffing, black hat tactics) and Google started showing pages with no use to users. It harms the authority of Google.
Back in 2021 or 2022, if you wants to appear in top positions, either you’ve to:
– run ads
– build strong SEOBut now AI don’t care about the things Google used to. So your goal shouldn’t be the #1 ranking. the goal should be more visibility, and that;s what AI overviews are doing.
At Outreach Empress, I started building links for a cannabis brand in United Kingdom.
– Top spot was taken for our keyword by a company with exact match domain.
– So I started publishing listicles, and brand reviews + brand vs brand comparison.
– After 5 weeks, our rank on google improved from #57 to #6 but we were appearing on #1 in AI search.
– This help our client to get 3x more sales from that keywords in a single month. So my simple suggestion is:
– don’t pick one.
– GEO is just advanced version of SEO.
– Focus on intent and lead with value
– Be authentic, don’t optimize for search
– Don’t stress about links, even if you got a mention, its enough for AI.Google still don’t show AI overviews for many keywords, so sites ranking in top 3 are taking all the money from there.
