I know I posted on here a little while back about landing my first client, but through that post somebody actually had reached out to me to help their own small business. After a while of discussion and negotiation we closed on a sliding scale type of SEO payment. So that will be $300 a month to start, $500 once were ranking on the second page/bottom of the first page, and finally $750 a month once were in the top 3 results. Truthfully I like this style of payment, because many of my clients are small business owners who could use a break till the results really start coming in. But im super blessed to have gotten another client especially through reddit. So thank you to all of those and I hope by sharing my experience maybe you can take little things away such as that sliding payment scale.

How did you determine the keywords you would use for the ranking?

This is not a good pricing strategy. It is based on the lack of trust they have with you since they only want to pay full price if you can do it. You might be tempted to do that, but it directly devalues your work and places you at a disadvantage when they now KNOW that you can do it for cheaper.
Then further, if you could do it for that cheap, why should you ever increase the price?
In seo you want to front load the campaign to essentially make a big rush towards more leads/results. It takes some trust yes, but why work with someone who doesn’t trust you.

First thing that comes to mind:

The hardest work is done up front, and you are charging less for the worst part. Only once you go into ‘maintenance mode’ do you get the full rate.

If you don’t hit the initial goals quick enough, then you get dumped having worked harder for less.
