So a few months ago I landed my first SEO client, and even bigger news is I just got them ranking on the first page for plumbers in their area. It was quite the wild ride, and I spent tons of nights in online courses and using whatever resources I could get. But I eventually did it, and even got an interesting deal with the owner. He was very skeptical at first about SEO, but I told him he could pay me on a rising scale so there would be less commitment to begin, but once leads started coming in he had to be ready to pay out. He agreed to start with $300 a month, then $700 once we’re on the first page, and $1000 if we can get to number 1. They are in a big city so ranking for big local keywords can equal 20-30 more jobs every month. But I finally did it and I’m so excited to get my SEO company up and running, I’ve had a lot of problems when I started with customers trying to get out of paying, and it really discouraged me. But I’m glad to say it finally happened so thank you for all the support. I’ve lurked in this group for a while now

Awesome, well done! That sounds like a decent rate he’s paying you too. How did you find the client?

Great idea for him to pay you on a sliding scale based on performance. He probably wouldn’t have hired you other wise.

Congratulations! SEO for a local plumber is a great idea. Not many plumbers know it’s the landing page update frequency, the amount of keyword-optimized blogposts, the bought backlinks, the well-built reviews, the social media traffic, the GMB profile and the loading speed of their site that decides their credibility as a company. Heck, if I was a plumber I’d focus on just such factors, and not wasting money on up-to-date plumbing courses etc.

I’d quickly be struggling finding blog concepts to expand upon. Again, well done.

Great job! The pay increase over time is probably the best way to go. Ruan Marinho discusses this on his YouTube channel about the best way to charge for SEO services.

    $300 to $700 to $1,000.

Jesus, dude I’m happy for you, but this is why it’s so difficult for SEOs to make money. We have inexperienced people undercutting us with crazy prices like this. I imagine you put in a lot of work for that $300.

The sliding scale was smart, but I bet there are lots of inexperienced SEOs charging $500 for crap work, and creating horror stories.

They undercut and run and then ruin clients for future SEO companies. Can we all agree that we are worth more than a few hundred. What we do is difficult. Companies should pay for results.

Man, /rant. My bad lol. Congrats. Now that you have the skill you’ll see what I mean when you start looking….

Genuinely happy for you, it’s not an easy graft getting to grips with all this and tackling client work. Keep it up, you should be proud!!

Very cool, I actually got my first client as well. I want to help mine with just minor improvements like optimizing their gmb, yelp, etc, then I’ll work on their site. Was your client okay with you handling all of their website changes?

Yay on the first deal and sometimes you have to just find a way to make a deal.

I would recommend charging more though in future. Providing high-quality SEO doesn’t come cheap.

Something I would recommend is using paid backlinks and if your client decides to drop you, those links will expire as their renewal comes around. That way, the client is less tempted to cut the cord as soon as they hit the top spot and you’ve done all the leg work.

Yah… you’re getting fucked. Should have ranked your own site and made him pay per lead. Could easily get $200 per lead. Fuck em. He’s making a shit ton more and you’re getting jack.
