A few years ago, I wrote a post breaking down what it takes to become an influencer. Things like finding your niche, building trust through consistency, tracking performance, and partnering with brands that actually vibe with your audience. Back then it felt like creators could really grow organically if they just kept showing up and sharing value.

Looking back on it now, it feels like almost everything’s shifted. Between changing algorithms, people being burned out on short form content, and brands wanting more definitive proof that content “actually works”, being an influencer seems way more complicated now. There’s definitely still opportunity, but standing out and staying authentic takes way more.

The basics are still the same, like focusing on storytelling, building real connections, and understanding what converts. But the growth strategies definitely need an update.

For anyone working in creator marketing or trying to grow a personal brand today, I’d love to hear what it’s been like lately. Does influencing still feel worth it?

    It never was.

Making it as an “influencer,” is no different than trying to make it as an actor, writer, musician, or athlete. Only a select few ever become popular enough to make a living doing it, the competition is outrageous, and those born into wealth and/or celebrity have a huge upper hand (and even they aren’t guaranteed success).

It’s easier to become famous and successful doing something else and than transitioning into it, which is just as equally unlikely.

Right now things are great because people have been using that new repost tool. I grew from 16k to 48k in the past few months! Mostly photos, maybe 20% reels.

If you have content that is repost-able, and people are utilizing the new repost feature in your posts, you will do great right now!! If you’re not getting a lot of reposts, your views are going to be way lower than normal right now. IG always does this with new features when they are released.

Beyond that, real connections and authentic enjoyment through interacting and creating is what works best. Having fun is the foolproof way to be an influencer. No part of running my page feels like a job, it’s all fun, and I get paid good money and given free products on top of it!

Brand partnerships are changing as the market gets more saturated. It is taking longer to earn trust than in the past. My advice to anyone trying to earn a living off creating in 2025 – find 4-5 brands that you work well with and do everything you can to negotiate long-term partnerships, like 6 months. Try and resign as much as possible. Not having to do outreach and setting up the same contract with long-term partners is the best way to get consistent income.

100%It us⁤ed to be about consistency and aesthetics, now it is more about personality and storytelling. People can tell when something is inauthentic from a mile away.
