  • Is it possible to de-index or remove negative search results?

PR, Comms, and Media agent here – the firm I operate has been tasked with a pretty severe case of Crisis Management and reputation repair. Long story short – a client was recently ‘cancelled’. A simple Google search yields multiple embarrassing and compromising articles/screenshots regarding the individual. Due to the sudden, and disproportionate reaction by the community, all previous achievements and positive information is buried. As you can imagine, this severely jeopardises their social and professional standing and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Is there any way to remove or de-index this. Prior to commissioning our service, the client did attempt to contact one publisher to remove the articles. Instead the website published the private email and request leading to more defamatory content.

Before anyone suggests, my first recommendation was for an identity change and relocation. As you can imagine, this is quite arduous and uprooting and the family wants to explore the options before making such a drastic decision. As such, I’m doing my due diligence.

I’d love to hear some insight or recommendations

DISCLAIMER: I understand many may feel that my client should suffer the shame for the rest of her life because of this incident. You are entitled to feel this way, and I respect your reasons. However, I have been given a job to do and I will always serve my clients to the best of my ability. Please refrain from advising that I do nothing or turn her away. These responses are unhelpful.

On tactic I heard a while back was paid search ads for specific keywords and bump your goodwill content to the top of the stack. This might be one of those situations where you have to throw money at it or fade into the back for a while before it dies down. The media cycle is fairly short these days right?

    1. Request Google remove the pages from its index
    2. Create dozens of pages on high authority sites which target your clients name in URL/H1/H2’s and paragraph text (Social Media accounts/Medium etc etc) which will gradually push the negative pages down the results pages), there are dozens of sites you can use.
    3. Build links to the created pages/accounts using clients name as anchor text
    4. Interlink your new network about your client and add some Google stacking (Google properties) into the network.
    5. Lawyers letter to all sites containing negative articles.
