though i came up with interesting and fun ideas for photos for our social platforms, my boss suggested that we should photoshop our product within another photo (ex: product in a stock photo flower field). while i don’t mind it being something that we could try and see if we like it i feel like it’s such a downgrade compared to taking our own photos. it’s confusing because she agreed with my idea yet suggested something else the next?

what should i do? is it only my place to deliver my service to whatever the client wishes and that solely suit their vision? even if that means sacrificing the quality of the work and potentially pushing us further away from our goal? is it okay press my suggestion with valid reasons, etc.?

just in case it matters and as far as my experience goes, i’m an in-house social media intern at a home decor company! it’s my first job in social media!

I think its OK to air your concerns but you also have to remember that photographing product can be a long and time consuming process and adds to costs. Maybe show them a photograph v photoshop and see how they feel after that.

Obviously it does depend on industry and what you are photographing, what you can get away with. In my industry at the moment I’m putting out quite rubbish renders and photoshops because that’s what I have to work with right now, and I don’t have the budget or time to prioritise photography. Is it perfect or what I’d do in an ideal world…of course not. But it gets the job done.

I’m not saying don’t strive for perfection, and definitely open a discussion about it because obviously photography is better, but you also have to be a realist about what is a want and what is a need and where that fits into the overall picture.

If it is bothering you, I would recommend at very least communicating it with your “boss”. It’s good that you have their best interest in mind!
