I’d love your advice on this: I want to reactivate my old IG account with 45k followers who were engaged 4 years ago, but not so anymore because I didn’t post anymore.

Would you advise to become more active on there, or just continue on my new account with ‘only’ 1.2k followers who are, relatively speaking, more engaged?

45k followers would definitely be better than 1.2k engaged followers but it depends on what your previous account was about.

Was it also an art related account?

Were the followers on your previous account interested in art?

Could they be considered as potential customers for your business?

If your art business is geographically restricted to a town or city, then were the 45k followers mostly part of this town/city or were they people from all over the world?

In addition to this, you’d want your 1.2k engaged followers to shift over to the old account. This is a difficult ask. 45k followers would be great but you need to make sure it benefits your business and not your social media metric

Maybe use both. Make the larger one your main account and use the second one as a backup account that occasionally directs people to follow your main account. Once you feel the followers you have cultivated on the new account have been made aware of the old account being your main then phase out the backup account slowly.

I’ll echo the suggestion to use both. And I wouldn’t discount the fact that having 45k followers “legitimizes” you in a lot of people’s eyes.

I would go with the larger account, and to transition into art I would make a couple posts that are eve just white and be like, hey everyone I’m back but with a new twist; revamping my account after a little reset; etc.

I’m following a brand right now who is rebranding and they did a few posts with just a white photo and did the same thing and people loved it. They are a jewelry company who uses old metal and makes It into something new. It’s an art form in itself.

The first thing you need to know if how engaged the old IG account is. I get it that 45k carries a certain amount of credibility but, at the end of the day, unless they’re engaged, it doesn’t mean squat. Post some musical content and see what happens. If you’re getting engagement, post a video on the music account letting people know you’re also doing art (and show them some in the video) and that if they’re interested in your art they should follow your new account.

I’d also consider doing some cross-promotion. Feature your art in music videos, even if it’s just on the wall behind you while doing a livestream. And show some of your art with your music playing in the background.

A photographer I follow recently seems to have had the same issue. I think he started promoting his old account in stories/posts and than literally messaged every person who was engaging on the new account inviting them to join the old one.

Not sure if this is a valid strategy though. 1k+ messages would be a pain to send….
