Is Ahrefs’ KD still useful?
Posted by on December 6, 2025 at 2:15 pmI’d like to open a discussion about Ahrefs’ Keyword Difficulty. Since KD is built almost entirely on backlinks to the top-ranking pages, I’m not sure how relevant that approach is today, considering how much SERP intent, content quality and topical authority influence rankings.
I’m curious to hear from other SEOs.

I must say that I did use Ahrefs as payed customer before, cancelled and use it as free version. It does not reflect the traffic I’m seeing – still, so I personally I don’t trust their KDs. I know that with Kds they are trying to save you time to go for the good keywords. But it didnt work for me.

Sometimes sites rank higher for a query with fewer backlinks than Ahrefs reports, compared to the competition with thousands of backlinks.
I’d say it’s a guestimate, not the gospel you take as is.
