    Basically, title

I’m an in-house copywriter and I’m trying to build some social proof for our Facebook page by inviting my personal friends list to like it.

The thing is, I know pretty much no one on my friend list will be interested in our product. With that said, I do want to have more likes on our page as a form of social proof, and feel this is a good way of going about it. I’ve got 700 something friends, and the page currently has under 20 likes, so every little bit helps.

I’m not great at social media marketing – are there any potential drawbacks to what I’m planning?

It’s hard to say for sure but it could hurt your reach on FB. Although since the page only has 20 likes it probably wouldn’t be a bad thing to invite your friends to like it. But basically what will happen is FB will show your friends (the ones who like the page) the posts. If they don’t regularly interact with posts, FB will stop showing them as much. If that happens, it can hurt your overall reach because FB recognizes that your audience isn’t really interested in your content. So FB may stop showing your posts to people in your audience who are genuinely interested in your product.

But again, with just 20 likes to start out with, it probably wouldn’t hurt to invite your friends. But this algorithm problem is why paying for likes is such a bad idea.
