I have an Instagram account where I share my German grammar notes with 16.3k followers but currently experiencing a very low number of likes (averages 400-500) and comments.

I always believe in producing good content so I spend a lot of time writing my notes and I believe they are valuable to German learners but my numbers have been stagnant for about 6 months now. I haven’t been growing much, partly due to one month break I took last month. I have started posting again regularly for two weeks now.

All this while, even prior to my short break, my engagement has always been very low despite all my efforts (replying everyday single DM/comment, stories with questions/quizzes…, commenting on others’ posts, asking questions in my captions that no one replies to other than saying thank you……)

I noticed many of other accounts in my niche gains a lot higher engagements in terms of likes and comments, which made me think if it is because I do not post personal pictures of myself?

Thank you in advance. I am rather lost and have no one else to turn to, to ask questions like these. I don’t know what have I been doing wrongly.

If a high number of your account followers aren’t engaging with content, even though you post consistently, something about the content needs to change.

Your subject area is pretty specific and useful (hence the high following) so this is less about the algorithm and more about followers not being compelled to comment/share, etc.

You could be spot on that you need to show your face more. Maybe create igtv videos going over your notes and invite discussion. Maybe talk in your ig story about what you post about in your feed.

Yes, any photos that show a face and have lots of colours tend to get higher up.

But don’t be pressured into showing your face. Let the likes follows etc grow naturally over time.

Are you using your name for the account name? I think if this is the case, it would be useful to occasionally see your face to be more personal. But a voice-over could also work; it’s not imperative.

Are you able to single out any differences between the outputs of your account v competitors? Neutral differences – not necessarily what you think is better/worse? Check creative execution/look and feel and also what they are actually saying. Are there differences in themes covered as examples?

Are you coming up with fresh ideas that are relevant/timely? What initially hooks an audience doesn’t stay exciting for long. You have to keep mixing it up and not being too predictable.

It’s good news if you’re not losing followers. If you’re retaining an audience over a respectable period of time, that’s an achievement in itself. They always say you should look after your existing customers/followers first.
