I know a bit of SEO, but have absolutely no clue how to make money with a website. Ads? Affiliate marketing? Selling stuff? It all seems overwhelming and complicated, while SEO is at its core just writing good content and ticking a few technical boxes. Would I like to just make a website which would make me some money? Sure. But I just don’t know how.

Because business is much more than SEO they are good at one thing, but making money requires additional skills like creating products, managing sales, customer service, managing ads… the list goes on.

I got into SEO to do SEO, not to become a business owner. If I wanted to own and manage a whole business, I would have done that.

Also they pay me well and I have zero personal risk.

Some of us are. But, as with most things in SEO, it depends. People can specialize in different areas of SEO. For example, someone might excel at analytics and the technical stuff but lack sufficient copywriting skills. Or, they might have all of these skills but lack knowledge of video editing (which is pretty much essential now to generate revenue).

Others might be struggling to find a niche that meets these crucial criterion:

    1. Something they’re passionate and knowledgeable enough to write about.
    2. Is actually profitable enough to generate revenue.
    3. Isn’t overly saturated.

This has become quite difficult and is only becoming more difficult. So, takes a lot of initial and ongoing work to build a profitable online presence. Many SEO professionals don’t have time to do that while also working full-time.

Your best approach would be to, for example, hire an SEO professional who knows what videos need to rank well, then hire a video editor who can follow those guidelines. Just because an SEO professional knows what a video needs doesn’t mean they know how to work with Premiere Pro (again, as an example).

Web designer here who has dealt with SEO experts. Generally time & effort is what takes to grow SEO. SEO is just one piece of the puzzle. It is very unlikely that you can get good SEO with a few hours of investment. Good SEO is consistent. Time consuming, a lot of on topic understanding, analysing and critical thinking.

All these things take time. I did say it’s one piece of the puzzle because the other pieces are visual design, trust signals, speed and marketing.

Without the whole package you can’t make a lot of money on just seo alone. But there is also advertising, customer service, geographical location, existing connections and other factors that also play a role.

I actually just really like doing SEO. I’m good at it. It’s my competitive advantage. I get the real good feelings from doing a good job, consistently. I do “own” several of my own businesses that I could do SEO work for and maybe one day not need clients, but then I’d also be on the hook for operations, logistics, etc that I really have no interest in. I do SEO so I sell SEO services, and then I don’t hate my life in order to earn a living.

Edit after reading some other comments: I like talking to my clients. They’re like friends/family to me, so maybe that’s the disconnect others have had. My clients are pretty much my only social life and I am happy with this.

I am pretty good at SEO, used to speak at conferences, managed large sites as an employee for companies for years and now I have my own online company that does pretty well.

A lot of SEOs do that, the difference is that when they start their own companies they are so busy you ll never see them at conferences, speaking engagements etc.

If your processes are good and you have a good team, running an agency can be very profitable.

Thats like asking why salesmen dont manufacture their own products. Being good at SEO doesnt mean you have a good offering to SEO or are capable of coming up with one. They are different skills.

I do make money from my sites haha. My agency just keeps me up to date and my mind working. That’s why we charge a lot, and deliver a lot.

You just don’t hear much from people like us…
