I’ll try to make this as short as I can. Let me tell you to begin with, I’m a 35 year old man, and had no interest in getting another social media app, especially geared towards young adults, this went on for months, until a few days ago, I bit the bullet and checked it out.

Besides all the dances, lip syncs, and jokes, there’s some amazing content on there. I have been going through a really hard time lately….harder than I’ve ever dealt with in my life. I am not OK….I am dealing with the biggest depressive wave I’ve ever had in my life the past three nights and I don’t see it ending anytime soon.. But, I have found so many supportive tik toks. I’m talking like, the kind of therapeutic support when you’re so broken you break down and bawl your eyes out and your best friend is there is there crying with you, and understanding, and telling you everything is going to be ok. This year has been especially hard, I don’t have any friends and it’s impossible to meet new people in these times and that has taken such a mental toll on me. This app has been a healthy outlet for me to not feel so alone.

I’m trying to keep too many balls in the air with no time off and worried about way too many people. I’m stressed. Strangely, I found tiktok stops an impending anxiety attack. Never thought something so silly would have a calming effect. Turns out taking 5 minutes to watch ordinary people dance in their living rooms can calm a person down and help get the bad stuff that can happen in life back into perspective.

People on reddit are often kinda snarky. My friends on facebook are maybe not always sane. But people on tiktok are happy. Like you I do feel less alone and a sense of community with all those people putting little clips out there and doing their part to cheer people up.

I personally don’t like it but if it’s working for you thats fucking awesome. It sounds like you are where I was 3 years ago… It does get better, but will never be the same. Lean into it and enjoy things for what they are.

Tbh I have had a completely different experience with tiktok. All I see are people saying trump 2020 in the comments or lgbtq pride or some other political stuff. When I do see content about depression, it’s usually some white girls crying about how their boyfriends broke up with them. But when I see actual tiktoks about depression the comments are way to negative and people call u a snowflake.

This is why I love it. I seriously have found the best people and it’s my favorite place to be.

I was snarky about Tik Tok until I discovered its massive LGBT+ side. I’m not straight and I instantly felt… comfortable?

    It’s nice.

TikTok is the best app ever made, it is far better than IG and FB.

Please remember that they explicitly restrict content from people with disabilities!
Edit: possibly past tense? It’s unclear. But still gross.

I find this pretty wholesome therefor, although it technically does not fit the sub rules, ill let it stand.

For real! I’ve learned so much about art history, design, mental health and finance through Tik Tok. Solid stuff, most is well researched (but it never hurts to double check the facts bcs internet). Your feed is catered to by your algorythm so click on “not interested”/save to favorites in order to customize it and you’ll soon arrive to your very own Tik Tok community!

Yes, everyone’s FYP is different depending on what posts, tags, related videos you liked. For me it isn’t all that pretty. I like dark humor and funny videos so a lot of toxic videos and posts such as, cancel culture, gender wars, politics even, radical lgbt community known as “alt tik tok” who will cancel anyone who doesn’t agree their views (kinda hard to explain unless you come across it) come along with that, which I’ll admit is sometimes not healthy. So the app has its good sides and bad sides

After a few days, your For You page should be filtered out “for you” as they say. It’s a pretty great social media app once you get to see the stuff you value.
