It depends whether the backlinks are good quality (relevant) or bad quality (irrelevant) ones. Also if they are purchasing backlinks then it’s bad.

And I think u need to share what content is in that report and where ur developer extracts his data from so we can provide better understanding and support.

Without showing website hard to comment.

Dev is definitely interested in SEO, because they check your backlinks.

However, if SEO guy using toxic spamming with anchors it may penalize website with Google Penguin

What else except backlinks SEO contractor does?

I can check his proposal with results and give you third opinion.

The only question your SEO guy needs to answer, is what legit backlinks he acquired for your website, on what keywords for what page.

If the answer is not: “I got you this link from this website on keywords {your service your area}”, then feel free to fire him. If he can answer this question, then fire your web guy. Ask the web guy the same question. Both are taking your money, and both can get you a link once in a while.

You should be getting a monthly Looker Studio report where you can CLEARLY see your Average Position for the pages these guys worked on, going down.

There are companies that will be willing to create such reports for you for “free”.

There are companies that would gladly give you a 3rd and 4th opinion, too.

Don’t let them tell you stories. Let them show you the data.

Most „spam“ links from semrush / ahref reports are useless (google john mueller spam links). However, there is an exception – if the guy is buying backlinks from link networks – that is a problem. How does your organic traffic look like? Growing/flat/declining?

Backlinks are one part, but what about your keywords and your areas of focus ?
Our SEO team started with an audit, then a keywords list (that I wen through and updated as well because I’m in a very specific market), they worked on text to help us rank on Google and Google maps.
I saw an increase in trafic and also an increase in demands related to the keywords we worked on. I also regularly monitor our place in google on our important keywords to see if we need to tweek some things.
    Wishing you the best !
Start to collect your data now so you’ll know if you have more contacts/leads or not in the year following the project.

SEO guy is bullshit. Basically just had a link network and added your site to it. Not super effective nowadays and if those links have a sketchy vibe Google notices it and considers your site toxic.
