I think I made a mistake. Now I want to relocate this link while maximizing the transfer of weight to my website (since the company's site has been decommissioned). What should I do? Should I write an article, or place it on the homepage—the primary domain with the highest weight?

You mean your own website link?

I stopped doing this years ago. It isn’t my website and I have no place putting a link there.

For max weight transfer put the link on the primary domain’s homepage. Also consider writing optimized articles with Babylovegrowth or setting up 301 redirects for old pages.

A sitewide footer link dilutes value, you’ll pass more weight by moving it to a single contextual link on a strong page like the homepage or a relevant article.
