I’ve been doing SEO for over a decade, Mid-sized and Enterprise for the last few years. Recently took a position as head of SEO at a small enterprise company and the previous person had selected Conductor as the SEO platform for the company.

I like the platform, think its reasonably good. For account support we basically have two people from Conductor that do a good job supporting the account, but they’re just okay at SEO. I was curious about how they build their data sets and learned it’s based off of SEMRush data and they add their own layer on top of it.

Their reporting dashboards are okay. They have a analysis service that was baked into our contract, after receiving several of these deliverables, I found them to look good on first glance, but their formulas that drive a lot of the analysis have some questionable choices that make it clear whoever created the report template wasn’t very experienced in SEO.

The conversation came up about credits for these reports and that we had \_\_\_ credits per year from our contract. So I asked them to send me a copy of the contract to review.

I about fell out my chair when I saw that my company pays six figures a year for Conductor. I knew it was expensive and I know Enterprise software comes at Enterprise prices, but I was still floored.

I think Conductor is a good service overall, but I don’t think the price comes close to being justified. Presumably if I’m spending six figures I should be seeing a 3x, 5x, 10x return on those dollars. I think where I get hung up is that it isn’t that much better than SEMRush.

It has some nice features that help, but I’m still having to pull down it’s data to adapt it to the forms I need in a spreadsheet. It might save me an hour or two a month/week. All of our reporting is already integrated into another BI tool and looking at usage reports, I’m the only one that really uses it.

I’ve been considering proposing a budget to reallocate those dollars to hire additional staff: content writer, a part time developer, etc. Upgrading our SEMRush account (which we have also) to have API access and use that to drive most of our work.

I guess what I’m getting at is, I don’t see the hype about Conductor, nor do I see the utility at that price. What am I missing?
