To all my fellow SEOs – do you also sometimes feel like your job is made up? I know it’s just a stupid thought in my head, but sometimes when I think of other jobs like policemen, doctors, firemen, I just get this weird feeling. Just curious to know if I’m the only one feeling like this.

For some context, I have 7 years of seo experience, generating millions in traffic annually, lots of leads, etc. And I love SEO. But these are all just numbers on my screen, you know? It’s all done from the comfort of my home office.

No, I don’t feel like this at all. I bring value to tons of clients and know it.

Now, I would never say it is “hard work”, because it’s not. It’s very easy work – and yet, 99% of posters on here can’t even do this very easy work.

Sure, it’s hard to stay motivated in this era of AI. I used to love writing SEO copy, but it’s not the same anymore. But I started in 2001 as a 15 yo kid with my own blogs, so 25 yrs in the field. Time for a change of career maybe…

That’s the reality of a digitally-based knowledge job. It’s very intangible compared to painting, mechanic, farming, etc. You get very little client interaction and don’t get to see the direct impact of your work firsthand.

I mean, sure, you *know* it generated X revenue for ABC Plumbing…but that’s still pretty intangible unless the owner takes you with on vacation in thanks for all your hard work.

I was a developer for 8 years and enjoyed it for a while but missed the cycle of customer has need, I fill the need, customer happy, customer pays. Next customer. So I went back into home services contracting doing water heaters as well as managing my own website/SEO plus a few other local contractor websites.

It’s a nice balance between intangible head work and physical body work.

It’s “made up” till you see actual results. Once you see your company grow and expand and you (and your employer) know it came from you….it’s very fulfilling. I like to know that my work allows over 50 families to eat.

As in anything, it’s all about perspective.

Yup. Very strange feeling as an SEO right now.

    Reading form submissions helped me.

Leads Ive generated have led to entire factories being built, new inventions making it to market, hundreds if not thousands of raises and jobs created. My own team eats well, has work flexibility.

COVID relief from banks, telehealth and all manner of things that helped people came from lifting up my client businesses

Not to mention, I work from kayaks, boats, waterfalls most of summer and ski mountains in winter since I have no location requirements.

Just dont help shitty clients with shitty businesses and shitty ethics

If your attributable pipeline is growing YoY, nothing wrong with a detached mindset.

What’s your secret? I like asking other folks what they swear by. For me, I swear by formatting and good keyword research. It’s a good place to be right now, I enjoy it.

Looks like you need to start your own business and start talking to clients.

I mean thats basically every thing at one point. Someone had to make it up before it even could exist. Basically every job had to have a need or demand before it could exist to pay someone todo it.

Money is numbers on a screen these days. There are lots of people who make many times what you make for doing zero. The way money flows in this world these days doesn’t always make sense.
