How to tell people their content sucks?

    Hi folks,

I manage social media for a decently large nonprofit organization and we have a lot of connected bodies that want to use our platform to advertise their events/initiatives/etc.

Their work certainly aligns with ours and we want to promote it but the posters/graphics/posts they want to put up are not very good. They get no engagement on their own pages for a reason. I feel bad because they put in effort, and I don’t know how to tell them “we’d like to support this initiative…but your poster sucks and I don’t have time to redo it myself” haha.

    Any advice?

    Honesty is the best policy.

I don’t know but if you figure out a solution let us know. I work for a Habitat for Humanity affiliate and deal with the same problem on a weekly basis.

I get low effort, shabby-looking social media campaigns sent to me, and then my boss wonders why we can’t increase our likes and follow rate.

Can you set up a couple of templates on Canva or something, for “corporate design” and to make sure that their content meets the standards? It’s a bit of work initially, but after creating them (and updating them or adding new templates when there’s the need to do so) it shouldn’t be too much effort.

You could also find (or make) a quick guide on how to take and edit appealing photos and how to write captions.

It might be a good idea to have a frank discussion w/ them saying that your company has very high standards. Explain it’s not you personally but you have to follow these strict guidelines that we’re given to you. I think it is only right to guide them, give them a template, ideas ect. Have it all written out w/ your guidelines as soon as you start working w/ them so this is not a surprise.

Say it like this: “contenu de votre entreprise est nul“??

I’ve just come out and told people after I worked with them for several months and felt more comfortable about it. They did appreciate the honest feedback!
