  • How to Spot Social Trends Before They’re a Thing

I work for a small agency and yesterday we got caught flat footed with the whole #blackouttuesday thing. Our social manager spaced and let Sprout do its thing and posted our regularly scheduled content. Is this the worst thing in the world? Not really but at least one client has asked about it.

Is there a site or a service that alerts trending hashtags or rising social media trends?

Spoiler: I am an old and aren’t in the trenches with this stuff everyday. Any assistance is appreciated.

I don’t know but this is a good question. Have my upvote friend, and hopefully someone has the answer.

Hard to do, I mean – there is google trends but that really tells you whats already trending. Sometimes it has a predicive factor to let you know if something may continue to trend. Social listening tools will probably help in understanding what topics are picking up steam, and then you can gauge what type of things may trend based on those discussions

I’ve managed social media at an agency level for major brands here in nyc… we use scheduling (often even) but tbh, brands that are actually aware don’t totally LEAN on calendars and have a team member on the ground that actually uses and understands social media. That’s how you avoid situations like these. No, there is no tool, bc the platforms are too “locked up” by design. There’s hashtag tools and all, but they don’t do much.

It’s super important to not think of social media as static, but rather, an always moving “current events” and trend barometer.

It’s sad to say but shit happens. Being aware and online if that’s your job, is your job. I knew a guy who’s job was social media guy for a radio station. He was ALWAYS on his phone. I was doing social media for a life coaching company so my stuff focused on ever green content. His was trendy so he was on the trends. Sometimes you’ve just got to put your nose to the dirt and sniff.
