  • How to determine my worth to the company? Creating content and managing two facebook pages.

    Hello,

I was hired as an assistant at a small City and after about a year they wanted me to start “doing social media” I know this is incredibly broad and I am still in the learning phase but I am trying to get an understanding of how much I can leverage my salary in the future once I get really smooth at this.

I am managing 2 facebook pages. 2 posts a day each, taking and editing 2 photo albums per month, writing about 2500 words between both pages per month, producing/editing 2 three minute videos per month, and creating custom graphics with information as needed (about 4 each per month)

On top of all that I still have in person responsibilities including designing and implementing special events, being the backup activity bus driver, curating/editing a weekly email newsletter, curating/editing a monthly print newsletter, and light cleaning/maintenance of the space.

Now a good amount of this is on hold because of the pandemic but I was doing all of this for about 6 months before the virus closed our doors to the public.

**I am extremely new to the management and growth side, but I have a little experience in the design and creating. I feel like I am doing a huge range of tasks and I may be getting underpaid at $20/hr.** But I am still new at this so I am willing to stay here in a safe atmosphere while I grow my skills. Any insight?

I have no advice for you, as I feel like I am also underpaid, but you are most definitely being underpaid. Do you at least get any benefits with your work? If not, that’s one shitty company/HR person who hired you.

Hi. I know you don’t want to hear this and I do believe you (and the whole industry) is being underpaid. How old are you? Many companies in my city (Raleigh) hire social media managers for about this rate either hourly or salaried ($42k). Sometimes less. Even Lenovo was hiring for 50k no benefits or PTO for a fuck ton of work and managing three countries’ social media accounts (200k+ following per). Supply/demand, plus many companies don’t understand social media strategy more than “hurr durr she’s posting twice a day, hanging out on social, this is more than enough $$.”

If you fall into a team lead or director position, you’ll see more money.

If you get more experience, your next SMM position will see more money.

If you freelance, you’ll see *way* more money.

Check Payscale. If your stats fall below the average range in your area, print it out/email and be an advocate for yourself to your manager.

It sucks. I’m sorry. Good luck.

Honestly, I’d expect to offer someone about $30k-35k/yr to do that kind of stuff. Honestly, I’d expect even more work for that type of pay. Really sounds like entry level social media position. They don’t pay much.
