  • How to Deal With Political Comments on Social Media

Posted by seohelper on May 14, 2021 at 2:25 am

    Hi everyone,

I just started a job in social media job for a shop and I was wondering if anyone had any tips in regards to political topics? I was told to block/hide anything controversial topics. I saw a comment today regarding Israel and Palestine and I didn’t know if I should hide it. What are your thoughts?

What I do whenever I see someone commenting something stupid whether it about anti mask or whatnot I just restrict their account so they don’t see that I’m deleting their comment but nobody else can see it. I’m doing the same thing with the Israel Palestine conflict, I don’t want people to fight more than they have to. There are thousands of civilians that will probably die because of the conflict and an Instagram comment won’t change anything it’ll just potentially make other people mad therefore causing more harm than good

Yes. Absolutely restrict (“shadow ban”) the user as soon as you see these comments.

Businesses are there to do one thing – sell their product.

The last thing the business needs is to get drawn into some completely avoidable social media nightmare that ends horrifically if they get called out for not supporting either side once you’ve allowed more and more people to weigh in on something completely unrelated to the brand.

Businesses shouldn’t get involved with anything other than the business ideally. It’s good to support causes but select them very very carefully if you do.

I see political posts made by bots on totally non-political subjects by bots with no profile or friends on Facebook it could be a topic like strawberry rhubarb pie recipes. It’s very annoying especially when administrative oversight is low.

I just delete everything questionable. If they leave another, or an angry comment about being censored I just ban them. You can drive yourself crazy monitoring comments… I choose not to.

If it’s right-leaning, block the user. They just aren’t worth giving any time or space anymore.

It depends on your company’s policies.

Some allow political comments, some hide them, some delete them. Some allow political comments as long as it’s related to the post (I think your support of BLM in this post is gross) but not on an unrelated post (Yeah, you think this sewing machine they’re selling is awesome, but the company supports BLM so let me tell you about why that’s gross).

Some allow swearing, some allow certain swear words, some allow swearing as long as it’s not directed at another person (“Fuck, that’s funny!” vs “Fuck you!”), some allow swearing at the company but not at another customer.

Some delete racial slurs. Some delete insults like snowflake or Karen. Some delete anything mean.

In the end, it’s having a policy in place and being consistent about it that’s the most important thing.

I just delete anything that could be offensive to other people. I don’t think twice about it.

Honestly, I delete and keep deleting / eventually block if the person doesn’t stop. My business is mission-driven (social and eco sustainability), and because of that some people equate that with politics even though we’re very much apolitical. So I delete…we aren’t required to give a platform for every terrible comment someone feels they need to make.

do you happen to have a keyword/profanity filter on your page? you should make use of that to input keywords that are sensitive to the page. i’ve used that to block profanities on the pages.

the above topic is quite sensitive given the current situation thats playing out so yes i would recommend hiding the comments on your page. comments tied to politics and religion are usually a big nono for commercial brands. (unless your brand took a stand against it which is another thing altogether)
