How does this kind of targeting work? (details in post)

Posted by seohelper on July 3, 2020 at 9:30 pm

Apologies for what is no doubt a pretty basic question – but how does the following scenario occur:

    1) I search for, say, pet food in Google.

    2) A pet food ad pops up on my Facebook feed.

    3) I click it, but decide it’s not for me.

    4) Over the coming days, countless other pet food brands are marketed to me.

    How does this work?

    Is this ‘easy’ to implement?

If I wanted to promote, say, scented candles… how do I get my ads to pop up to someone who has just visited a competitor candle brand?

I know this is probably very simple. But as someone completely new to all of this, a lot of the resource online goes over my head a little.

If someone could provide an overview of how this process works and the difficulty of it, I’d be much appreciative. Thanks!

Hey so what I think you need are ‘in-market’ audiences on their display network.

That is a prospecting strategy to reach exactly the kind of strategy you refer to. Check what ‘in-market’ audiences they have as I am sure their is something for candles or similar.

Play with a few audiences and learn which work best for your product and creative.

Google is always refreshing who is in the audience based on real-time signals from the user behaviour. Feel free to ask if I didn’t cover your question

[Take a look at Google Ads targeting](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2497941?hl=en). What you’re specifically asking about is custom intent audiences with Google. You’re basically targeting searchers based upon their recent search intent.

Google builds an audience of people that recently performed searches for dog food, or similar queries. You can then target that audience with ads for dog food.
