  • Hired an SEO company…

Been in business about 4 years. Website got 100-120 hits per day (according to GSC).

Hired an SEO company to do a complete website redesign and SEO.

Redesign launched on December 1st and only averaging 50-60 hits per day (according to GSC).

Is it normal to see a 50% drop in clicks from Google the first 30 days or did the screw something up?

According to SEMrush the “technical” stuff looks good. Content has obviously changed.

Not enough info for a reliable response. Did the URL structure change? Are the previous keywords still getting impressions and clicks? Did they include new internal linking? Are all the (new?) pages indexed? Do you have backlinks from other sites that now point to nowhere? Did they do 301 redirects to new pages?

It’s only been 21 days, so this may be google trying to learn the new site. Or, it could be the designer missed some things. Dive into your GSC and GA and see what is going on.

Curious to know if this was a redesign from scratch or overhaul of existing site and platform. Sounds to me like they did not salvage the old, but there’s not enough context. Hopefully it’s a temporary lull.

Short answer, no this is not normal. Yes they did screw up somewhere.

    Long answer with many assumptions.
Sounds like they redesigned the website without copying existing webpages or links. Some of your old webpages were bringing in traffic and they’re most likely missing now. That’s likely the reason for such a huge reduction in traffic.

Basically, they didn’t take any consideration into your existing traffic source and redesign the website based on ease or what you felt looked nice. This happens all the time because most people believe the design or look of the website matters more than traffic.

Most companies when designing a new website tend to overlook this. Probably because the website designer doesn’t communicate with the SEO team.

I’m making a lot of assumptions here because I don’t know the before and after website domain and design

Usually things like redesign, relaunch, and content get mixed a lot.

I don’t think SEO companies should do website redesign as that’s for developers.

Redesign usually should be a design change not content, and in some cases the whole CMS.

Usually the rankings drop after a redesign is normal but should pick up after a while if the content was not changed dramatically. If categories, urls or structure was changed a lot if might be the cause of the ranking drops as well, as that might affected how the link juice is split internally.

So without the details no one can really tell, but hopefully you recover soon.

What did your traffic look like in december last year? A lot of companies get a lowertraffic in christmas time – obviously niche dependant, so i Hope it is Not a Shop?

Way too less Information to say, that they messedit up

On the surface, pretty common to see a 15 to 20% drop the first few weeks after a redesign. Seen 50% too. But things are usually back to normal by day 30. If not, something needs to be fixed. Start looking now just in case.

It’s a lot of work to do what you said and shortcuts are often taken because moving every URL takes time.

Check if they set up proper 301 redirects. A 50% drop is rough but could recover if the technical stuff is handled right.

The core update is currently rolling out so the SERPs are volatile, it’s possible you may have already taken a hit before the redesign was launched and haven’t realised.

A 50% drop is pretty steep. Check your redirects and make sure all your old URLs are properly mapped.

A drop after a redesign isn’t unheard of, but 50% is pretty rough. Most of the time when I see this, something got changed that Google cared about more than the agency realized, URLs, internal linking, on-page intent, or pages getting consolidated or nuked. “Technical looks fine” doesn’t mean rankings are safe
