Hey everyone, I have a question about compensation for running an AdWords campaign for a company you work for officially under a separate role.

Hey Folks, I run the AdWords campaign for the small construction company I work for. It is not my official job, but I have become the bootleg IT/ internet guy at my company, thus I take on tasks such as AdWords and such. My boss is secretive about what leads convert from the campaign I created and manage (he receives the leads and acts as the salesman), but I know we’ve gotten somewhere around $70,000+ in contracts from the campaigns. To add, I think he keeps the conversion rates secretive as to make sure I do not ask for compensation. So my question is, how much would he be paying to have a third party run such a campaign? Honestly, I feel I should be compensated a % of sales, but I did not think to establish that idea upfront as I honestly did not think it would generate any traction.

Any help and guidance are much appreciated. Thanks!

Honestly, I’d group this in with everything else (if there is any) and bring it up in your next salary review. If you work in-house and it’s part of your role, I wouldn’t expect to be paid commission. That said, each company is different but it sounds like your boss isn’t about to start paying you per lead. Maybe request a salary increase at your next review as your job description/duties have expanded.

How much is the ad spend? Some might charge a flat monthly rate or a percent of ad spend as their fee.

I would push for a higher salary because you’re taking on more responsibility. I wouldn’t ask for a % of sales. In my opinion, that wouldn’t go over well. I guess all you can do is present to him the value you are bringing and see what he says.

I charge 25% of Ad Spend to manage accounts for clients.
