Google Tag Manager: Conversion Linker Tag

Posted by seohelper on February 13, 2021 at 7:23 pm

Hey all, how important are adding google conversion linkers? one of my accounts suggested it. I read up on the uses on google support [https://support.google.com/tagmanager/answer/7549390?hl=en](https://support.google.com/tagmanager/answer/7549390?hl=en) and I think I understand the general concept of it (better optimizes mobile and passes conversions data more reliably?) I was hoping someone could confirm and put the use of the conversion linekr tag in a more practical use statement. Also wondering how important it is to have, none of my other accounts have sggested this as of yet so I am wondering if this is something I should implment across all of my clients accounts? Thanks in advance!

Pretty important if you track conversions on a page that isn’t the landing page.

    – User lands on yourdomain (dot) com/whatever?gclid=xxxxxx

    – Conversion linker takes the gclid value, and stores it for later reference if a user converts during a pageview that wasn’t the initial landing page view (because after that first pageview, the gclid parameter is gone)

Also, it’s seriously the easiest tag to add. Just do it!

Not that important if you have a “proper” GTM integration.

**If you’re an AdWords user**, you should add a Conversion Linker tag if:

    1. You are not using Google Analytics, or
    2. You have not linked your GA and AdWords accounts, or
    3. You want to override the default cookie settings for storing the gclid

If you fall into one of the above three categories, you should deploy a Conversion Linker tag ASAP.

If you have deployed Google Analytics through GTM, *AND* you have linked your GA and AdWords accounts, then you don’t need a Conversion Linker tag. The base GA tag already performs the same functionality as the Conversion Linker.

    Hope it helps
