Get visitors without backlinks

I've had a website for a while now, but I’m not getting any visitors from Google. I’ve heard about something called the "sandbox" and that it can take time to get out of it and start appearing in search results.
I currently don't have any backlinks since it’s quite challenging to obtain them without spending money. Is it possible to get out of this sandbox without investing money, or is that necessary?
I know keywords are very important but do they actually care if you dont have any traffic?
I’d appreciate your advice.
