tl dr: Social media noob needs to know how to conduct a high-level “needs assessment” for a home building company so my agency can secure more work

I am doing my internship for a web development agency, and I have recently been tasked with conducting a needs assessment for an upscale home development company.

I need to produce a plan to address their primary need of “increasing their user base” on social media, among other things such as SEO and general optimizations done on their website. I have the website side stuff down pat, I am quite knowledgeable surrounding that stuff, but that brings me to my question:

How do I go about conducting a (social media) needs assessment for this company? I don’t have access to any of their accounts. Not sure what I should be using to get this done or what the plan/assessment should even consist of. Social Media is not my strong suit, and I do not have much working experience in it.

The purpose of this plan/strategy/needs assessment is so we can bring it to them and secure more work. It is not our first point of contact with them as we’ve done business with them in the past, so I’m not focused too much on establishing credibility or anything like that.

This assessment by no means has to be exhaustive, either. My boss is asking for a “high-level overview”.

Any sort of direction on this would be really appreciated. Thanks, y’all!

p.s: I am not sure if “needs assessment” is the right nomenclature here, but I don’t know what else to call it because I’m not auditing them, and I’m not putting together a strategy proposal either

I’d start with an audit of what they currently have going on. Outline their current platforms that are active, include their follower/like counts and comments, take screen captures of their recent content. Then also find their top competitor and do a comparison. It can be a PowerPoint deck or something similar.

Your goal will be to show them what they COULD be doing if they engage with you.
